to mention my FAVORITE part of my birthday? I was helping Madisen get into her pajamas and she started talking to me about her hair. Our conversation went something like this:
M: "Mom you know how my hair is strawberry, well your hair is cherry."
I smiled and replied, "No, my hair isn't red like a cherry, it's brown."
M: "Well, hair has to be like a fruit so yours is cherry."
E: "I guess if it has to be a fruit, then mine is more like chocolate."
I love her thought process; when talking about her hair color we always tell her that it's strawberry blonde. She just calls it strawberry. And since when is chocolate a fruit?

Last Tuesday one of my cute piano students showed up with a goldfish in a bag. She told me that she'd just won it at a carnival and that her mom wouldn't let her keep it. Then she asked if I'd like it- talk about a loaded question! (I should've taken the opportunity after she left to quickly flush it down the toilet before my girls got home, but I didn't.) So now Spot, the fish, sits on my kitchen counter. I couldn't bring myself to purchase an expensive fish bowl for a goldfish that probably wasn't going to last more than a week. Therefore, he's in the only clear container we have- my favorite Pampered Chef glass mixing bowl! The girls can't wait to feed him every morning, Bill and I can't wait until he's gone.
I tried to catch Caitlyn talking to the fish, like she usually does, but this was the best I could get. If you haven't heard Caitlyn talk before you really are missing out- she has the SWEETEST voice & seems too tiny to be talking in complete sentences.

Goodbye 20's
Yesterday I lived through a day we all dread- the day we leave our 20's and we become officially old- I turned 30! There is something that sounds wiser & more mature about being in your 30's. I was thinking this week of all that I've accomplished in my 20's: graduated from BYU, taught elementary school for 3 years, found the love of my life, got married, had 2 children, moved numerous times, bought a home, to name a few. I feel more mature & wise than I was 10 years ago. It's time to start fresh- this is a new era of my life and I'm ready! I only wonder what the next 10 years will bring????
It was a perfect day! Thanks for all of the phone calls & cards- it was much appreciated! I got to sleep in a bit, Bill made breakfast, and then he took the girls to help clean the church so I had an hour or so to myself. When they got back we headed out to do some shopping. I had a few gift cards that were burning a hole in my pocket. We took a break from our shopping to enjoy lunch at Rubio's (well, the girls had chicken nuggets from Wendy's). The weather was ideal for sitting on the patio & watching the birds. I was reminded that THIS IS THE LIFE- enjoying the afternoon with my little family- it sincerely couldn't have been a better day!
After relaxing at home I attended the Relief Society Broadcast at our stake center. WOW! I'm pretty sure that Elder Uchtdorf was speaking directly to me! He knew that I was pondering my current status in life and contemplating some goals for the next 10 years. He encouraged women to see the depth of their own potential. I loved EVERYTHING about his talk, but the following statement really struck me, "In the end, the number of prayers we say may contribute to our happiness, but the number of prayers we answer may be of even greater importance. Let us open our eyes and see the heavy hearts, notice the loneliness and despair; let us feel the silent prayers of others around us and let us be an instrument in the Lord's hands to answer those prayers."
After the meeting I enjoyed a gourmet meal comprised of prime rib, salad, rolls, and mashed potatoes. The high council & stake presidency prepare a dinner for the women every year & they don't miss a detail. The tables were beautiful, the lights were dim, and the crowd was large!
My sweet husband helped the girls make me a cake & we celebarted when I got home. Madisen insisted on taking my picture while they were singing. You can see he had some help with the decorations (and if you look really close you can see some fingerprints), but I couldn't have been happier!!
Why, you may be asking yourself, did I choose to have dinner with the RS sisters and not my family on my birthday??? Well, we're really going to celebrate next weekend at the beach! Bill planned a little birthday get away with a few friends. We're looking forward to a weekend together- filled with water, bikes, sun (we hope), friends, and conference.

A Visit to Utah
Two weeks ago the girls and I went to visit my family in Utah. My cousin Jason was getting married and I wanted to bottle some fruit. And let's face it- I was homesick for my family! I found a sweet deal on airplane tickets so we opted to fly this time. On the way up the girls were absolute ANGELS!
My parents and sisters picked us up from the airport and we headed straight to the state fair. Some of my cousins who are involved in FFA were showing their sheep and pigs so we got to see my grandparents, some aunts,uncles, and cousins.
Everyone enjoyed walking through the livestock barns where we saw sheep, pigs, goats, cattle, and horses. But the highlight was definitely when we stumbled upon this great interactive kids area. The kids were given a chance to do farm chores. They put on an apron and carried a bushel through the farm. First, they got dried corn and “fed” it to the cow. If they “milked” the cow they got a small plastic milk jug to put in their bushel. After the cow they had to pick fruit off the fruit trees, then plant seeds in the field, then harvest the vegetables they planted.
With their buckets full of milk, fruit, and veggies, they filled the tractor (tricycle) with gas and drove over to the animals. First came the sheep that needed to be sheared, then collecting the eggs from chickens. Finally, they took all their goods to market and sold them for $1. What good is a dollar if you can’t spend it? So the last station was a store where they could spend their hard earned fake money. The girls each got a snack size container of sugary cereal.
And of course, no trip to the fair is complete without riding the carousel!
We spent Friday afternoon enjoying my mom's lush backyard- complete with LOTS of grass and a swing set. Madisen said, "Look grandma, you have vegetables growing in your yard!" A novel idea to my Vegas native.
By far my favorite part of the trip was eating all of the fresh fruits & veggies! Madisen snapped the picture below of my mom & I picking tomatoes- large & cherry. We also ate 3 colors of peppers, raspberries, zucchini and I brought home some rhubarb. And my mom cooked up some of the salmon & halibut that she & my dad caught last month in Alaska. It's ALL better when it's fresh!!!
Here we are at the wedding dinner for my cousin. I'd never been to The Point at the Huntsman Cancer Center and the view was breathtaking.
We were pleasantly surprised when Bill hitched a ride with a friend so he could come up for the BYU vs. UCLA game. It was supposed to be the game of the season, but we all know how that turned out.
He got to enjoy a little tailgating party with the men- somehow bratworst is appealing if it's grilled especially in a parking lot.

We bought some duck food & the girls were busy feeding ducks for quite a while. I caught Madisen in her seed throwing action. True to form, Caitlyn was timid at first (she has a love/hate relationship with all animals) but she warmed up enough to fee them from Aunt Kellie's lap.
And of course, we bottled some fruit. We bottled 28 quarts of pears and 6 quarts of peaches. Sadly, my mom had to finish the peaches on her own after we left b/c the rest weren't ripe. (Now I have to find somewhere to store all of that in my basement-less 1800 square foot home!) I just had to take this picture of my mom's AMAZING basement. When I was in college I used to go 'shopping' there every time I was home- I was so spoiled & don't like canned fruit. I've only shown the section for bottled fruit. Isn't it incredible?! I just love that there is jam, tomato juice, and many fruits & veggies.
On Sunday afternoon we celebrated Caden's birthday. He & I share a birthday so we thought it would be fun to celebrate a little early & let the girls get in on the action. And, as you can see, they were quite helpful. My favorite pictures are on the bottom. Caden LOVES anything with wheels. He doesn't push it along, instead he flips it over & spins the wheels. So the girls decided to join him, thankfully it was a three wheeled bike.
The only sad part of our trip was that we didn't get to see any fall colors. It was still a little too early. We did, however, enjoy a few cool evening walks in the parkway and get to basque in the clean smell of Utah air! I love going home!

Soccer & Slurpees
We signed Madisen up for a little soccer 'camp' that a couple of moms are doing on Friday mornings. I didn't get any pictures at the park, but I'm sure you can imagine about 20 3-year olds running around in flourescent green shirts chasing the ball and doing 'drills'. I finally coaxed Madisen onto the field after she watched the kids for a few minutes and I promised her a slurpee. She begs me daily for a slurpee now that we have a 7-11 just down the street, so I knew this would be good incentive.

Chuck E. Cheese
Last Friday we decided to have a family fun night. Bill came up with the idea to go to Chuck E. Cheese- our children are deprived b/c they've only been there once, and that was just to play games. So off we went. While we were in line trying to decide the most 'economical' way to experience Chuck E.'s, a saintly woman in front of us handed us a coupon that she wouldn't be using. HOORAY! We ordered ourselves a pizza & the girls were delighted to each have a coin cup with 'moneys'. As luck would have it, they were just happy to go down the free slides! They also liked riding on the coin operated toys (pictured below) but weren't too excited about the rest of the games that need coins. So we have coins for another day!

*This morning while we were saying our family prayer, Caitlyn shouted "Everybody watch out!" as she tried to escape from my lap. All three of us had a difficult time containing our giggles & we quickly ended the prayer!

Words of Wisdom
This morning I had an appointment with the chiropractor. I have taken my girls with me a few times & my doctor is sooo sweet with them- today they were perfect angels. He speaks with a gentle & kind voice and always tells me stories about his daughters- he has 3 & no sons. Today he was telling me of an experience they had last night while creating an emergency plan. He said it was so neat to watch his wife & daughters laughing & giggling together. Then he said, "One day these two girls will be 2 of the greatest friends you have! There are times as a parent that are tough and they won't think too highly of you, but if you stick through it with love it will pay off. And they will count you as their great friend, too." My mind immediately went to the loving friendship that I have with my own mom & sisters. He's right- patience & love make it all worth it in the end. I just love my girls! I sure don't want them to grow up, because they are at such magical ages right now, but it's exciting to think that it can get even better!
You KNOW you're pregnant when:
*You cry uncontrollably while reading your friends' blogs about sending their first child to kindergarten. (Yes I'm talking about you; Julie, Brooke, & Laura!)
*You just have to have a piece of pizza at Costco, even if it's only 10:30 a.m.
*Sweet treats aren't too appealing.
*You are conducting primary & there happen to be about 7 crying children in junior primary. You suddenly take to the motto that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
*The next week in church your husband comes in immediately after teaching his Marriage & Family Relations class to say that he just 'accidentally' announced that you're pregnant. So you have to quickly tell your fellow presidency members so they don't hear it from their husbands first! (To his credit he's just so excited!! For which I'm grateful!)
*Your husband puts this comic on the fridge because it's oh so true, some days!
Caption: "Tomorrow someone will ask me, 'How was your evening?' And I'll say, 'Oh, same old, same old.'"
*Your almost 4 year old asks when we are actually going to have the baby & you have to explain that April 30 is only 7 holidays away!
**I haven't been to the doctor yet, so stay tuned. (I was 8 weeks last Friday. The full effects of pregnancy haven't hit yet. I'm crossing my fingers it stays that way, but not holding my breath.)

I have found...
I've been adding a few tablespoons of this to everything I bake lately; pancakes, muffins, breads, oatmeal, cream of wheat, granola, etc. If you don't know about the health benefits of flaxseed, you should check this out. A bonus is that it can be used as an oil and an egg substitute (1 tbsp milled flax seed, plus 3 tbsp water = 1 egg). I feel good that I've added Omega-3's to our diet since we don't get much fish.
Another thing that my friend introduced me to is these awesome shirts! They are especially perfect for those us who live in Vegas where it gets annoying to have so many layers! They are like 'Shade' shirts, only they are short& have elastic at the bottom to keep them in place. You may also like to know that they sell for the grand total of $10.95 + shipping. What a bargain! To my knowledge they are only sold online, here.

Bennett's Birthday
For FHE on Monday we attended our friend Bennett's first birthday party. It was QUITE the party! He is one popular 1 year old- there were 43 people scheduled to attend. Due to the rain that we RARELY receive, some people were scared away. The party was complete with a pinata, a train cake & party favors.
Caitlyn sure loved her piece of cake! And she's learned quickly that if she doesn't want someone else to eat her suckers, she might as well have 2 at a time!

A Sad Minute
Our car is in the shop today so Bill came home from work to take Madisen to preschool. While I was explaining to Bill how to get to preschool, Madisen went to the car to buckle herself in. Caitlyn got her shoes & backpack on, "wike Madsen", and took daddy's hand as she said, "Mon daddy. Car seat." Bill asked her where she was going. Her reply, "In daddy's car." I knew taking her away was going to be painful. And it was. She SCREAMED, "Daddy take my car seat. Go wif daddy!" I promptly tried to distract her with the toy car you see in her right hand, but that wasn't working. I asked her if she'd like a few candy corns & that was golden, but they had to be in a bowl. Of course the first 5 I gave her weren't sufficient, she needed a "wittle bit more". Sigh. So here she is, a somber Caitlyn being rewarded for staying home with mommy this morning.*She wore her backpack for about the first hour. And it's been on & off at least 4 times since then.

My Preschool Girl
My sweet and spunky Madisen started preschool yesterday. It was a bittersweet moment for this mom. I know she's ready for a change & a challenge, but I'm sad to think that she's growing up so quickly. On the up side we still have 2 years together before she starts kindergarten- she misses the Nevada deadline by 23 days. I think it will be to her advantage to be the oldest.
She was so excited to wear her new outfit & take her Princess backpack to school. She & Caitlyn sure adore each other! You'll notice that Caitlyn is holding a "packback wike Madsen" and Madisen wanted to make sure that Caitlyn was included in the pictures.
When I picked her up she was willing to pose for one quick picture with her fabulous teacher! Her class will consist of 6 little girls. She knows a couple of them, but not real well so it will be a good experience for her to reach from her comfort zone. Miss Katherine said that Madisen was cute & funny, not shy. (I thought she'd be shy at first, but I was wrong.) She obeyed, stayed on task, played well with the other girls, and threw her gum in the trash. All things that make a mother proud.

(I thought she'd be shy at first, but I was wrong.) She obeyed, stayed on task, played well with the other girls, and threw her gum in the trash. All things that make a mother proud.

Labor Day Weekend
We had such a relaxing weekend and still managed to fit in a few fun events. On Saturday we went swimming as a family and later Bill watched the BYU football game with some friends while the ladies did a little home decor shopping. And we just HAD to try out the SUPER CLOSE In-N-Out, WAHOO!
I realized that we hadn't made any homemade ice cream this year & summer is almost over, so on Sunday we mixed up a batch (I got it right the second time!) and had some friends over for a birthday party. I take no credit for the cake, it was all Sara!
Monday morning we did the Children's Discovery hike early in the morning. It was nice & cool- only 80! Once we entered Red Rock park I rolled down the windows since it was BEAUTIFUL outside. Madisen quickly asked me to roll them up because she was cold- yep 75 degrees is cold to her. 
While we were hiking Bill was working on ANOTHER home improvement project- this snazzy flower bed. He's not so sure about the stark contrast to the desert landscape, but I think that once the flowers fill in it will be an oasis!
And how can Labor Day go by without having a BBQ and doing some swimming? My girls were in heaven swimming in this hot tub. I couldn't even get Madisen out to eat a hot dog. My favorite new phrase of Caitlyn's is, "Wike Madsen". In this case, she needed floaties, wike Madsen- but we could only find 1 spare. She kept saying, "I jump, mom". So she'd jump to me & we'd swim around in a circle, then she'd say, "Do gain, mommy!"
