Utah in February- part 2

The church history museum in Salt Lake has a fabulous children's area! We went there about a year and a half ago, but decided it was time to go again. We went on Friday afternoon & then again on Monday morning- at Madisen's request. Both times we went we were the only ones there! There were activities for all ages & my kids loved it ALL!

{Constructing temples.}

{Caden loved to pull these puzzle pieces off the wall & Caitlyn thought it was her duty to try & put them back together.}

{Madisen rocking her carefully wrapped baby, & leading the music- "Christmas Bells are Ringing"}

{Dressing up- Caden wanted NOTHING to do with this activity!}

{Caitlyn is getting sweeter & more gentle every day- she loves baby dolls!}

{All of the kids LOVED these colorful chairs. They bounced from chair to bench, turned them upside down, & made a 'train' with them.}

We also managed to:
{Go with Grandma to look at tile & granite for her kitchen remodeling project}

{Have a movie & popcorn night- Madisen was glued to "High School Musical 3"}

{Help Aunt Kellie make Snickerdoodles for her Sunday Mingle}

And I got to spend some time on Monday afternoon with 4 of my old college roommates. It was wonderful to catch up with these incredible women! We reminisced about the old days, shared parenting stories, cut out patterns for sewing a bag- at Rachel's direction, while teaching Katherine the basics of blogging.

{Brooke, Katherine, me, Julie, and Rachel}

It's always bittersweet to leave Utah. We miss our family & friends there, but are always delighted to come home to our daddy!

A busy week

*The day after we returned from our trip to UT was the annual Blue & Gold Banquet for the Cub Scouts in our ward. I got to help with the decorations, etc. We have a CREATIVE scout leader who wanted to make sure that is very thorough! The gym was transformed into a Route 66 theme for the evening. We had dinner in a 50's Diner, complete with a rollerblading hostess!Bill & the girls sat at the Texas table with the Walkers while Denett & I worked at the Soda Shoppe.No scouting event is complete without a few games, cheers, and awards. Bill won first place for his age group on the snake game. (He had to eat a Twizzler's Pull-N-Peel licorice & swallow it without using any hands.)There was even a photo-op for families. The pictures were printed there & placed in these frames. (This is a picture of a picture b/c our scanner doesn't work.) The evening was a HUGE success! I love being a tiny part of scouting... even if I come from a family of all girls & have only girls... it's fun for us to see what the boys are up to!

*Wednesday was a preschool make-up day for Madisen.

*Thursday was a day full of doctor appointments for mom. I had a follow-up ultrasound in the morning & got to see our little girl again. She is really looking like a person now, she's exactly 4 pounds and I have 9 weeks to go. It was neat to watch her moving on the screen & to know that she is healthy!

*Today we went to the park- it was such a beautiful, sunny (70 degree) day. But of course, as the afternoon progressed the wind picked up. Madisen & I came away with our first sunburns of the season.

This evening while I was playing with the girls in the family room I noticed that Caitlyn needed a tissue. I asked her to go get one in the bathroom. She dutifully obeyed & returned with some toilet paper. I attempted to help her wipe her nose, but she insisted on doing it herself. (Big surprise!) Then she disappeared into the bathroom- for a trip to the trash, I thought- for quite a while. When I asked her what she was doing she responded, "I putting it in there mom." I went in to find this:Yep, she was indeed putting it in there- the entire remaining part of the toilet paper roll was now in the toilet. Carefully placed in there one piece at a time by the girl in the corner with big brown eyes!

Utah in February- part 1

Last weekend the girls & I went to visit my family in UT. We decided to go one more time before the baby comes. It may be a LONG time before I'm able to travel with 3 children by myself.

The timing was perfect because we also got to be in town for the Draper Temple Open House. The girls were excited to get to go IN the temple. After we came had completed our tour, Madisen asked when we were going to go inside. I had to explain that we had been inside. Since we hadn't gone in the front doors, she didn't quite have the concept that we had actually entered. The tour was self guided with a brief stop in one of the sealing rooms where there was a couple that briefly spoke about the sealing ordinance. At the end of the tour we were led to an adjoining stake center for a lovely reception. There were pictures of temples from all over the world and some of the beautiful artwork that was found in the Draper Temple.
{The girls chose to have their picture taken by this picture of Christ.}

{The bus ride to & from the temple sans car seats was pretty exciting for these 3 kids!}

{My family in front of the temple.}

On Saturday we took the kids to the zoo. Madisen went to a zoo once in Phoenix when she was about 2.5, but she doesn't remember much so this was a new experience for both of them.

We only made it past 2 animal exhibits before it was time for lunch. It boosted everyone's blood sugar- important for making the day pleasant!
Many of the animals were sleeping & some were gone for the winter, but we still got to see at least most of them from a distance.
{The zebras & giraffe's were among their favorite animals.}

{This tiger statue made Madisen nervous at first, but adding grandma to the picture sure adds a touch of courage!}{I have no idea why they both have their hands in their mouths, but they were impressed with the size of these turtles.}
{And of course there was a playground. They loved the slides, this huge teetor-tottor, climbing the rope & the monkey bars.}

{And the day would not be complete unless the girls were 'helping'! They each took many turns pulling our lunch around. Caitlyn even pulled it up a few hills. That girl is not a quitter!}

Home Improvement

A few weeks ago Bill tiled & painted the girls' bathroom. I'm finally getting around to putting up the pictures. He decided to lay the tile on an angle rather than straight which I thought was a bold move for his first time going solo. It took a little longer, but it was definitely worth it! He never ceases to amaze me & I think the angle makes the room look a little bigger.

All in a Weekend

**This is a very detailed account of our weekend, but I just had to remember all of these details!**
We went to CA to spend the weekend with Bill's family. When the trip was planned 2 months ago, Bill wasn't able to take any extra time off work so we decided to fly to cut down on travel time. Our plans were to leave on Friday night at 6:40 & arrive in LA at 7:45 p.m. Spend 2 days with Bill's family & fly home on Sunday evening at 7:00, arriving in Vegas at 8:00. A Perfect Plan! And it almost worked. Here's how our weekend went.... {Side note: It was a rainy Friday evening in Las Vegas & other cities as well.}

*Bill got a phone call around 4:00 saying that our plane was delayed until 7:15.
*30 minutes later he got a call saying our plane is delayed until 7:45.
*15 minutes later he got a call saying our plane is delayed until 8:00- please arrive at the airport by 6:40.
*So we enjoyed a leisurely Valentines dinner & played a game.
*We arrived at the airport where Bill dropped off the girls & I with our 2 car seats, 2 duffel bags, 2 shoulder bags, & stroller while he went to park the car. I got our car seats checked in & received our boarding passes. The girls, bags, stroller & I managed to get up to the security gate where we waited for Bill.
*We got through security without a hitch & played Old Maid by the gate while we waited for our plane.
*We boarded the plane around 8:00, so we're just a little behind the latest schedule.
*After everyone was seated on the plane we waited 20 minutes at the gate while the people below loaded our baggage.
*Then we taxied out where we waited for 20 more minutes to take off. It was now 8:45.
*When we arrived at LAX we waited 15 minutes for a plane to leave our arrival gate.
*We made it through the airport & out to the curb where the girls & I waited for grandma & Bill waited at the carousel for our car seats. It's 10:00.
*Grandma loaded up our bags & stroller but we still needed our car seats. I went in to tell Bill that maybe we should check the oversize luggage area. No car seats.
*Grandma did a few more laps around the air port while we, kids included, talked to the people in baggage claim about our missing car seats.
*Then she parked the car where she took the girls to read books & have a snack while Bill & I worked with baggage personnel.
*They offer us booster or infant seats. Neither works for our girls; you must be 40 lbs. to sit in a booster & under 20 for the infant seat. The lady looked at me & said, "What do you want me to do? That's all I have." I politely refuesed to use either option!
*After MUCH deliberating {It's now 11 pm & NO stores are open, no rental car companies are open, & our airline couldn't borrow from any other airline b/c when they had done that in the past they hadn't returned the seats so no one would lend to them anymore} we came up with a solution: the airline company let us borrow the car seats of another passenger who had lost their luggage. Their delivery service would meet us at our house in 1 hour to pick up the car seats- yes the car seats of some unknown passenger- they were, expensive (Britax) & barely used car seats! On Saturday morning we could go buy new car seats that the airline would reimburse us for because we needed something to get around in since ours wouldn't be delivered until sometime between 2 & 5 pm on Saturday afternoon.
*We arrived at grandma's house at midnight. Sergio & his buddy picked up the car seats 20 minutes later.

Saturday was a blast! The weather held out beautifully (no rain & pleasant temperatures) & so did our children (who only had 6 hours of sleep) .
We went miniature golfing,
rode the tea cups,
had lunch at Wahoo's, played at a quaint park where we were the only patrons,
played at the cousin's house,
& then left the kids with a babysitter while the adults went to dinner.
On Sunday we went to church where we were greeted by many familiar faces. (Bill & I lived in that ward for 1 year, right before moving to Vegas 4 years ago.) After church we put our girls down for early naps while we prepared a Sunday dinner that resembled a Thanksgiving feast. We were lucky that Bill's grandparents, who live up the street, were also able to join us! After dinner we visited while Christy & Tyler entertained the children, & the kids decorated cookies until it was time to leave.
This adorable couple chauffeured us to the airport. (P.S. Tyler won a lot of points when he surprised Christy by flying in to spend the weekend with us! So sweet!)
And the girls wanted a picture in their 'new' car seats before we had to return them.
{For the rest of the story it's important to note that the LAX airport is HUGE! It's shaped like a U- think terminal 1 at one end of the U & terminal 7 at the other end.}

*Our flight to LA had been on American Airlines- terminal 4- so that is where we got dropped off because we figured that's the airline we were flying out on.

*We arrived at the check-in counter at 6:00, ready to trust them with our car seats. The man asked where we were going, I answered Las Vegas. He asked us how we were getting there. I said, "The 7:05 flight. I checked on line & it's on time." His response was, "Oh that must be a United flight. They're in terminal 7- you're going to have to hurry to get there on time." Picture this: Bill & I (7 months pregnant) have 4 car seats, 2 duffel bags, 2 personal bags, 2 kids, & 1 stroller. I ask with pleading tone, "Sir is there anything you can do to help us? We have to return these 2 car seats & get reimbursed from your airline & catch that flight?!" His response was, "No I'm sorry you have to go downstairs to the baggage claim office to return those seats & you'll have to walk to terminal 7."
*So Bill & I are off. Me carrying 2 shoulder bags & the 2 car seats to return downstairs while he took the rest of the stuff to terminal 7.
*When I caught up with him at terminal 7 he was on the phone talking to the 'help' desk at the self check in kiosk. The sign above him was flashing; 45 minute cut off time for all luggage.
*Something was wrong with the kiosk & he had spent 7 minutes trying to get it to work- just enough time to miss the cut off for check bags.
*So we printed the boarding passes & were off- with everything in tow.
*Once we got through security- which was no small feat, I might add!- we hurried to our gate where the plane was being boarded. As we handed the man our boarding passes we realized that we were all sitting on different rows. NOT going to work. So he had to go in the computer & change our seats- while a whole line of people patiently waited.
*We boarded the plane & sank into our seats as we praised our children for being so WONDERFUL! They were absolute ANGELS!!!!
*After we arrived in Vegas & made our way through the airport we headed outside to the curb so we could wait for Bill to get our car. As soon as he left Madisen informed me she needed to go to the bathroom. I looked at my load of stuff & told her she'd have to wait until daddy got back. She started sobbing b/c she just couldn't wait. I tried to help her see that we didn't have any other options. After about 10 minutes Bill called, he was at the car but I HAD THE KEYS IN MY PURSE. So he had to ride the shuttle back to us. He arrived after another 10 minuets, waited while I ran Madisen back into the airport for a potty stop & then he boarded the next shuttle to get the car.

We are relieved to be home, happy to have created memories with our family, and armed with the knowledge that when choosing an airline you should choose Southwest!

Pre-Valentines Celebration

Since we were headed out of town for a short family 'reunion' with Bill's family, we celebrated Valentines on Friday night with our own little family. I made a festive dinner (breakfast) & we gave the girls their Valentines. We had a breakfast scone in the shape of a heart, strawberries, cranberry juice, some sliced ham & ketchup- of course!The girls were delighted with their Valentines; playdoh, socks, bathtub finger paint & a pack of gum.

Festive Hair Part 2

We tried the other hair do on Madisen on Valentines Day and I think it turned out OK. I just need to figure out how to make it stand up because it kept flopping forward.

New Hair Do

Yesterday I found a link to a great blog that shows different hairstyles for little girls; complete with step by step instructions & pictures. The theme of the week is Valentine's & there were some that were cute even on short hair. Since today was Madisen's Valentine party at preschool we decided to give one a try. She chose the one she liked & decided we'll try a different one tomorrow. I think it turned out OK for being short on time & for my first time. I love new ideas & can't wait to try the heart braid next!She was delighted to be decked out for the party! (And I was delighted when she came home with the hearts still in tact.)

Harlem Globetrotters

Last night we got to attend a 'performance' of the Harlem Globetrotters. Bill's company had some tickets for the employees & their families so we went VIP style. Which means that we sat in a catered box. Sadly we were in a box that was at the end so we didn't have a great view of the court. My girls enjoyed getting out, watching Globie & the other inflatable mascots, playing with the Vickers, and having some snacks. But the older kids in our box had a much better understanding of the whole mock basketball game. We still had a great time being together & watching the mascots!

Much Better

Although I love candy hearts, I couldn't handle looking at those pink polka dots one more day! I prefer a cleaner look. De-cluttering spaces around me is just one thing I'm working on this year.

I attended a stake Activity Days activity on Saturday where the theme was 'Celebrate You'. I liked the word celebrate so much that I decided to incorporate it into a new title for our blog.

cel⋅e⋅brate

1: To observe (a day or event) with ceremonies of respect, festivity, or rejoicing
2: to make known publicly; proclaim

My goal is to look for something to celebrate each day; not likely that I'll share each thing, but to keep me focused on all that is good, right, and wonderful in my world!

Crafts & Cooking

We've done a couple of crafts this month that I thought were worth documenting. A few weeks ago Madisen created this heart lady (shown in red) with her friend, Mara. I thought she did such a cute job of making it look like a person- face & all. She even drew fingers & toes on the hands & feet. We now have them hanging in our kitchen as our Valentine decor. I haven't quite pulled out the box of decorations & at this point I don't think I will.
Today the girls had some friends over for a play date & they had fun lacing these hearts, loading them with stickers, & adding finishing touches with markers. I couldn't resist capturing the looks of concentration on my girls' faces. And it's also important to note that it was virtually silent while 5 little girls were diligently lacing.
Today I was in the driveway talking to a friend & the kids were with me playing around until they disappeared into the house. A few minutes later, Madisen came running out proudly holding her peanut butter & sugar sandwich. I came in to find that she had helped herself to the ingredients, which included the heel of the bread. This is a girl who doesn't eat crust on anything, but today she ate almost the entire thick heel, crust & all.
{Side note: My girls prefer cinnamon & sugar to honey or jelly on their sandwiches. To each his own!}

Broken

A friend sent me this link the other day. I thought I'd share this beautiful song that carries a beautiful message with all of you! Enjoy!

*On a not-so-spiritual-note, I'm praying that something good is going to come out of the broken economy. Bill & I are trying to face the cold, hard, reality that our home is worth 50% of what it was 2 years ago. Turns out that we're not going to get a great return on our investment! I can't wait to see what good thing will come of this!!

Some Insight

I'm not really a big candy eater (I prefer homemade sweets) unless the candy coincides with a holiday/ season. You won't find Starburst or M&M's in my pantry. Nope, it's Robin Eggs in the spring, Candy Corns in the fall, Nerd Jelly Beans or candy canes at Christmas, and my absolute favorite are those crunchy Necco Candy Hearts for Valentines! And yes, they must be Necco brand!
